I’ve been a fan of Sean’s for as long as I can remember. If I wasn’t renting Powder from the local grocery store, I was catching Boondock Saints on late-night television. Needless to say, this guy is a staple of my life, and with the recent transition to writing and directing, I couldn’t be happier to check out his recent labors of love.
Considering his background in Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, you know that Born a Champion is a must-watch for me, but it was his whimsical nod to old Hollywood, Frank & Penelope, that cemented Sean’s voice behind the camera. While the film itself is struggling to find an audience, it definitely deserves one.
With the cast that Sean and his team compiled as well as the clever music selections, it was hard to become disinterested in the wild story as it unfolded from scene to scene. And while I was happy to be along for the ride, the adventure may not be for everyone. Despite the many comparisons I’ve been seeing, I’d argue that this one stands on its own.
Sean Patrick Flanery knows his way around a script, and while this ride may be too bumpy for some, I think Sean’s voice is fresh and polished enough to push any project, including this one, to the next level. Do yourself a favor and add Frank & Penelope to your queue today!
